Majors Baseball Tribe & Minors Softball Venom bring home the hardware after success weekend
Four Andover teams from the Pymatuning Area Youth Organization (PAYO) did the community proud over the weekend in the District 1 Little League Tournaments held across Ashtabula County. In baseball action were the Senior League Outlaws and both the Majors Baseball Tribe and Spiders as well as the Minors Softball Venom on what proved to be an exciting day of games. Baseball games were played on Saturday and Sunday in Jefferson and on Saturday in Kingsville for softball.
While the weekend was short for the Senior League Outlaws, both Majors Baseball teams lived up to their strong regular seasons scoring multiple wins that led to a collision course between the two PAYO teams. When the two teams went head-to-head, the Tribe came out on top in the end with a 2-0 victory before wrapping up a perfect day at 4-0 with a shootout win over Grand Valley. Meanwhile, in Kingsville, the Minors softball Venom dropped their first game to the eventual champions from Conneaut, but won the bottom of the bracket with back-to-back wins over the Ashtabula Indians and Kingsville's Chaos. However Conneaut was able to outlast the Venom in the championship game as the Venom ended up as the District Runner-Up. The Venom were led by Elizabeth Jernigan and Kailee Reynolds on the mound, as well as offensively by Reynolds, Jernigan and Kaylee Hussing.
The action concluded with the Spiders being eliminated on Sunday morning and Grand Valley fighting their way into the championship game to earn a rematch with the Tribe. The Tribe jumped out to a quick lead and held on for a decisive 10-4 win to take the District 1 Championship. Andrew Wludyga earned the the game ball in the Championship after two shutout innings pitching, a 3-3 performance at the plate and a diving catch in centerfield. Justin Britton and Rylan Compan also stuffed the stat sheet both pitching and hitting and Cole Stroke added 3 hits of his own.
While the District Tournament capped off successful season for the Majors baseball teams from PAYO, several divisions still have several games remaining in regular season play as we look to finish the 2021 season strong.
